When to Replace Industrial Filter Cartridges — The Differential Pressure Rule

Three Replacement Triggers — Use Whichever Comes First

01 — Differential pressure reaches ~15 PSI

Or the cartridge manufacturer's stated terminal differential pressure for the specific product and application.

02 — Downstream flow drops measurably

At constant system demand. A sustained, unexplained reduction in flow downstream indicates significant head loss.

03 — The time interval is reached

Typically 6–12 months depending on influent quality and application, or manufacturer's stated maximum service life.

What Differential Pressure Is

Differential pressure (DP) is the difference between the pressure reading at the housing inlet and the outlet, measuring flow restriction. Instrument every housing: one gauge on inlet, one on outlet. Inlet PSI − Outlet PSI = Cartridge DP.

DOE vs SOE — Seal Risk at High DP

Single open-end (SOE) cartridges with O-ring ends provide a positive mechanical seal at the housing's O-ring groove, independent of end cap compression force — a meaningful reliability difference from double open-end (DOE) designs at high differential pressure.

Service Interval

Service life depends on solids concentration, flow rate, and filtration surface area — no universal timeframe.

Cartridge Changeout Checklist

Record DP, relieve pressure, inspect components, and log intervals as part of every changeout.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What differential pressure means it is time to change a filter cartridge?

Roughly 15 PSI differential, or the cartridge manufacturer's stated terminal differential pressure for that specific product — whichever is reached first, alongside a measurable downstream flow drop or the 6–12 month time interval.

How do you measure differential pressure on a filter housing?

Install one pressure gauge on the inlet and one on the outlet of every housing. Differential pressure (DP) is Inlet PSI minus Outlet PSI, and it is a direct measure of cartridge loading and flow restriction.

Is a DOE or SOE cartridge more reliable at high differential pressure?

Single open-end (SOE) cartridges with O-ring ends provide a positive mechanical seal at the housing's O-ring groove independent of end cap compression force — a meaningful reliability advantage over double open-end (DOE) designs at high DP.

Is there a universal cartridge replacement schedule?

No. Service life depends on solids concentration, flow rate, and filtration surface area, so LibertyCES uses the three-trigger rule (differential pressure, flow drop, or time interval) rather than a fixed universal timeframe.
